Ember Saturday--"Comfort"

Speak low to me, my Saviour, low and sweet
From out the hallelujahs, sweet and low
Lest I should fear and fall, and miss Thee so
Who art not missed by any that entreat.
Speak to me as to Mary at thy feet!
And if no precious gems my hands bestow,
Let my tears drop like amber while I go
In reach of thy divinest voice complete
In humanest affection - thus, in sooth,
To lose the sense of losing. As a child,
Whose song-bird seeks the wood for evermore
Is sung to in its stead by mother's mouth
Till, sinking on her breast, love-reconciled,
He sleeps the faster that he wept before.

  1. This didn't say comfort once, but it seemed to breathe within the piece nonetheless. Amazing.

  2. Sister, two verses come to mind - two favorite ones. God, speaking about Jesus, through Isaiah said ' . . . he will not brawl or cry out, His voice is not heard in the streets, He will not break the crushed reed, or snuff the faltering wick . . .' The other is Jesus' own words, "Come to Me all you who labor and are overburdened and I will give you rest. Shoulder My yoke and learn from Me for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. Yes, My yoke is easy and My burden light.' Note God says Jesus will not break the reed that is already crushed or snuff the flame that is already flickering. Jesus is VERY gentle with our wounded souls. Jesus welcomes us, encourages us to put aside the yoke of the world - worldly pursuits, transient and unfulfilling - and take on the yoke of humble living and learning, promising to labor at our side - sowing tearing but returning with arms full of the sheaves of joy! Alleluia! Your brother Joseph, SFO
