The strong soul

Permanence, perseverance and persistence in spite of all obstacles, discouragements, and impossibilities: it is this that in all things distinguishes the strong soul from the weak.

  1. Kindred Spirit, may I share a personal event with you? It was World War II and my mother was in Hungary. She was a young woman out in the fields with other people. Suddenly a Russian plane was heard approaching overhead. Everyone screamed "get down, lay on the ground!!" My mother said to herself - no she would not get down. She would stand up and look straight above her. If she was going to die, she wanted to see who was going to kill her. She stood erect. The pilot came down very low as he swooped across the field. My mother saw his face. He looked at my mother. Their eyes met. He did not drop the bomb. He went on. My mother lived to be 94 years of age. She never forgot that man's eyes. (Kindred Spirit, I have never shared this story with anyone. My mother had a strong soul. Just now as I wrote this, my heart cracked into many pieces for my mother. I never cried when she died. I did not allow myself that privilege. I think now I am going to cry. -- Please forgive me.)
